Meditation and Relaxation Exercises
Meditation and relaxation exercises are among the best methods to help reduce anxiety and stress, and achieve peace of mind, clarity, and inner calm. These exercises help calm the mind, relax the body, and relieve stress related to health issues such as heart diseases and psychological pains. There are many exercises you can practice regularly with ease, all of which focus attention on self-awareness. You can practice one or all of them and then choose what suits you best. Try to practice each exercise for at least 20 minutes daily. Here are the most important ones:
Deep Breathing
Deep breathing, also known as abdominal breathing, is one of these exercises. It involves taking long, deep, and slow breaths, focusing on them to get rid of scattered thoughts and feelings. This exercise is especially beneficial for those with eating disorders, as it encourages them to accept their bodies and treat them more positively.
Muscle Relaxation
This exercise combines deep breathing and muscle relaxation by enhancing the connection between the mind and body. You practice deep breathing for several minutes, then focus on a specific part of the body and release any mental tension or negative feelings related to it.
Guided Imagery
One meditation and relaxation exercise is guided imagery, which enhances a positive self-vision. During this, the mind recalls a place, scene, image, or experience that it believes provides positive energy, then focuses on it with all senses to soothe the soul and mind. It is important to engage as many senses as possible during guided imagery; for example, if imagining the ocean, you should hear the sound of waves, smell the water, and feel the warmth of the sun on your skin.
Mindfulness Meditation
One of the best exercises is mindfulness meditation, which reduces symptoms of depression and eliminates anxiety and stress. This is done by sitting comfortably in a quiet, well-lit place, then focusing on the present self without distracting the mind or looking to the past or future. This enhances positive energy in the actual present life.
Yoga, Tai Chi, and Qigong
Yoga, Tai Chi, and Qigong are all part of ancient meditation and relaxation exercises. They depend on regular breathing while performing a series of coordinated physical movements, which provide mental focus that prevents distractions and enhances flexibility, balance, and muscular strength.
Self-Massage
Self-massage using essential oils can help relax the body. Afterward, drinking a hot beverage such as tea can further promote physical comfort.
Repeating a Phrase
Focus on your breathing and choose a word or phrase that soothes you, then repeat it several times. Examples include phrases like “I am calm” or “I am good” to reach a state of calmness, comfort, and stability.
