Narcissistic personality traits and how to deal with them

Traits of a Narcissistic Personality

There are many traits by which narcissistic personalities can be identified. Below are some of these traits:

  • Sense of Superiority

Narcissists believe they are the most important and greatest people in the world. They focus on promoting their achievements everywhere and often resort to lying to appear successful and exceptional in front of others. All that matters to them is proving their superiority.

  • Living in a Fantasy World

Narcissists ignore their painful reality—that people around them recognize their narcissistic nature. Instead, they motivate themselves and fill their failures by living in a fantasy world that exists only in their minds. This fantasy provides the confidence, support, and praise they crave but can’t find in the real world.

  • Craving Praise and Admiration

Narcissists feed their ego through constant praise and admiration. A lack of this praise leads to anger and increased demand for admiration. Some narcissists even surround themselves with people who constantly fulfill their desires and compliment them endlessly.

  • Entitlement

Narcissists believe they deserve the best of everything and that others are obligated to meet all their needs without objection. They believe it is their right to immediately have anything they desire.

  • Exploiting Others

Narcissists exploit everyone around them to meet their own needs, treating others as mere tools for their personal service, showing no concern for others’ feelings or opinions.

  • Bullying Others

Narcissists feel jealous when they see someone who is well-liked or popular. The only way they deal with this is through bullying to belittle and mock that person.

How to Deal with a Narcissistic Personality

Narcissists exhibit many eccentric traits, and if not handled properly, they can exploit others, become more arrogant, and bully people further. Here are the most effective ways to deal with a narcissistic personality:

  • Avoid Trying to Change Them: Some believe they can fix a narcissist’s behavior and help them overcome their flaws. In reality, they will only face attacks and bullying, with no change in return.
  • Ignore Them: The best approach is to ignore the narcissist and not let them affect your emotions or make you feel inferior.
  • Avoid Frustration and Confusion: Most narcissists enjoy seeing others embarrassed or confused. A key strategy is not showing discomfort in front of them to deny them the satisfaction of dominance.
