What is Emotional Numbness?

Emotional numbness is a psychological condition that occurs as a result of traumatic experiences or illnesses, in which a person loses the ability to control or express their emotions. It is as if they are paralyzed in expressing their feelings, whether verbally or non-verbally. They tend to avoid others and refrain from talking about any emotions or feelings.

Causes of Emotional Numbness

The causes of emotional and mental numbness vary, the most important of which are:

  1. Taking certain medications that affect mood, such as psychiatric drugs.
  2. Alcohol or drug addiction.
  3. Experiencing psychological crises, such as divorce or the death of a family member or close friend.
  4. Suffering from chronic psychological disorders such as autism, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, schizoid personality disorder, depression, brain damage, post-traumatic stress disorder, or depersonalization disorder.
  5. Memories and past events associated with painful experiences that are difficult to forget.
  6. Exposure to bullying, oppression, or fear from family or colleagues.
  7. Difficulty communicating and interacting with others.
  8. Loss of self-confidence and trust in others.

Symptoms of Emotional Numbness

Emotional numbness is accompanied by symptoms that make a person lose their sense of life, such as:

  1. Persistent silence.
  2. Poor concentration and slow thinking.
  3. Loss of ability to empathize with or feel for others.
  4. Loss of desire to live.
  5. A lack of hope and passion in the life of someone with emotional and mental numbness.
  6. Feeling the same about sadness and joy, as if both have the same effect.
  7. Inability to express emotions or to cry or laugh.

Treatment of Emotional Numbness

There are many ways to treat emotional and mental numbness, the most important of which are:

  1. Meditation and practicing relaxation exercises like yoga, which directly affect mental state, improve mood, enhance health, and boost positive energy.
  2. Engaging in physical exercise, which plays a major role in eliminating anxiety and stress associated with emotional and mental numbness. Exercise also helps release happiness hormones and creates a barrier between the individual and life’s problems.
  3. Eating healthy food, which greatly affects mental well-being, as good health encourages an active, positive outlook on life far from emotional and mental numbness.
  4. Ensuring at least 8 hours of sleep daily, as healthy sleep positively reflects on mental state, while lack of sleep increases irritability, bad mood, and the tendency for constant silence.
  5. Enjoying nature, breathing fresh air, and inhaling pleasant scents, all of which improve mood.
  6. Practicing favorite hobbies and listening to calm music.
  7. Avoiding sources of anxiety and stress by staying away from negative people and unpleasant places.
  8. Expanding one’s social circle and making new friends who share similar interests and hobbies, which helps in overcoming emotional and mental numbness and encourages expressing one’s thoughts and feelings with these new friends.
