How to Deal with Hesitation

There are many ways and methods to healthily deal with hesitation, but some of the simplest and most important are as follows:

  • Repetition of the Task Many Times

Practicing doing things and repeating them is very important in reducing hesitation each time until these tasks are mastered completely, away from the state of hesitation experienced.

  • Self-Engagement

The real problem faced by the hesitant person is thinking and fearing others’ opinions. Therefore, you should train yourself not to care about people’s evaluations and opinions but focus on your own circle only, so you can eliminate hesitation within yourself.

  • Avoid Applying the Idea of Perfection

The hesitant person should avoid the obsession with perfection and idealism in simple tasks. Gradually reduce this obsession because there is no link between success and perfection, nor between creativity and hesitation. You can be creative without hesitation and anxiety.

Treatment of Hesitation in Decision-Making

Hesitation is one of the main obstacles to making the right decision at the right time. Therefore, I advise you to imagine yourself as a counselor to your friend; this helps you step out of yourself and see things from different perspectives that differ completely from the hesitation view. In other words, train yourself to be your own friend when you feel hesitation about something.

There is a saying: “Successful people decide quickly and change slowly; hesitant people decide slowly and change quickly.” Simply put, if you want to be successful, you must be fast in accomplishment, productivity, and decisiveness, while closely monitoring results. The hesitant person fears making decisions and changes them immediately without justification. Choose to be productive, creative, and successful in your life.

Traits of a Hesitant Personality

Some traits are common in the nature of hesitant people, as follows:

  • Low self-confidence.
  • Constant focus on gaining others’ approval and satisfaction.
  • Fear of criticism.
  • Difficulty in making decisions.
  • Excessive demand for information and clarifications.
  • Feeling uncomfortable with oneself and with others.
  • Feeling lost among the options and alternatives presented.

Causes of Hesitation

There are many reasons that lead to hesitation, and they cannot all be listed, but here are some of the most important:

  • Low Self-Confidence

The most important cause in the makeup of a hesitant person is their lack of self-confidence; they do not trust their abilities and competence and see themselves as inferior no matter what they achieve. Therefore, when discussing how to treat hesitation, strengthening self-confidence should come first.

  • Fear of Failure

Fear of failure is an obsession for the hesitant person by nature; since childhood, they have been labeled as a failure, so they are very cautious about their decisions and fear making mistakes or failing in any matter. Additionally, fear of others’ criticism and comments becomes a major cause of hesitation and anxiety.

  • Social Pressures

Sometimes a person hesitates out of consideration for social customs and traditions, especially those that impose an unnecessary burden from their point of view. This hesitation may disappear once the person moves to a different environment or society.
