What Is Emotion in Psychology?
Emotion is defined as a state of change in behavior and psychological condition resulting from a stimulus, which may be internal or external. This leads to a shift in both the emotional and physiological state. Emotion can also be described as a complex pattern of reactions composed of the following three elements:
- Personal experience.
- Physiological response.
- Behavioral or expressive response.
It’s worth noting that the definition of emotion in psychology is still not entirely clear or agreed upon. Psychologists continue to explore various theories to better define emotion and assess the accuracy of current models.
Types of Emotion in Psychology
Psychologist Paul Ekman identified six basic types of emotion:
-
Happiness
This emotion arises from the release of the following neurotransmitters and hormones in the brain, which promote feelings of joy and pleasure:
- Serotonin
- Dopamine
- Oxytocin
- Endorphins
-
Sadness
Sadness occurs when serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain drop. If this decline continues over time, it can lead to depression and a variety of physical and psychological problems such as fatigue, lack of concentration, and sleep disorders.
-
Fear
The emotion of fear is linked to the fight-or-flight response, which is activated when facing a real or imagined threat. This causes physiological changes like rapid breathing, increased heart rate, and muscle tension.
-
Anger
Anger is somewhat similar to fear in that both share the same neurotransmitters and hormones released during their occurrence.
-
Disgust
Disgust is an emotion that protects us from exposure to unpleasant or potentially harmful things. We naturally avoid things that evoke disgust, including unethical behavior.
-
Surprise
Surprise can be either positive or negative, depending on the trigger. A positive surprise may lead to happiness, while a negative one may be a shock that results in various psychological issues.
Factors That Help Regulate Emotion
Practicing meditation is one of the most effective ways to regulate emotions in psychology. It helps enhance awareness of the emotions we experience, which in turn increases our ability to accept and manage them.
