Self-love: What is it and how to achieve it?

What Is Self-Love?

Self-love is a state in which you reach a level of appreciation and acceptance of yourself, arising from actions that support your physical, mental, and spiritual growth and development.

In other words, self-love means having great respect for your own well-being and happiness. It means caring for your needs and not sacrificing your well-being to please others. It means not settling for less than you deserve.

Self-love includes not only how you treat yourself but also your thoughts and feelings about yourself. When you imagine self-love, try picturing how you would treat yourself, how you talk to yourself, and how you feel about yourself.

When you love yourself, you generally have a positive view of yourself. This doesn’t mean you feel positive all the time! For example, you might temporarily feel upset, angry, or disappointed, but that doesn’t mean you stopped loving yourself.

To simplify, think of other relationships around us, like a mother’s love for her child. A mother loves her child unconditionally, but that doesn’t mean she never scolds or corrects them.

Self-love can mean different things for different people, as we all have unique ways of caring for ourselves. Discovering your personal form of self-love is an important part of your mental and emotional health.

Remember: If you know how to love others, you also know how to love yourself.

First Steps on the Journey

Reaching self-love requires taking some initial steps. Here are a few practices that can help you achieve it:

  • Speak to yourself with love and positivity.
  • Prioritize your own needs.
  • Reduce self-judgment.
  • Build self-confidence.
  • Be honest and kind to yourself.
  • Forgive yourself.

To do this, listen to your body, give yourself rest from work or home responsibilities, and step away from your phone and social media distractions. Start your journey with “Me and Myself”

Is Self-Love the Same as Selfishness?

You might be wondering: what is the difference between self-love and selfishness? There is a big difference.

Self-love does not mean placing yourself above others or thinking you are better than anyone else.

Self-love isn’t about bragging or showing off, and it doesn’t prevent you from caring for others. It simply means giving yourself the same kindness you offer to others.

In contrast, narcissists believe they are better than others, avoid taking responsibility for their mistakes, and lack empathy for others.

Ways to Practice Self-Love

There are several ways to practice self-love, including:

  1. Become more mindful of yourself and your needs.
  2. Act based on needs, not deprivation.
  3. Practice self-care through healthy habits like exercise, balanced nutrition, and proper sleep.
  4. Allow time for activities you enjoy.
  5. You will love yourself more when you set boundaries or say no to work, relationships, or activities that drain or harm you physically, emotionally, or spiritually.
  6. Invite the right people into your life.
  7. Spend time with yourself and for yourself.
