Types of Emotional Feelings
Emotional feelings can be divided into the following six types:
-
Happiness
This is the feeling everyone strives to achieve. It can be defined as a state of pleasant emotions characterized by satisfaction, contentment, and gratitude. The factors that bring about this type of emotional feeling vary across cultures, but good health is a common factor in all of them. Studies have shown that health is indeed linked to happiness—and vice versa, as happiness enhances both psychological and physical health.
-
Sadness
Sadness is a temporary state characterized by disappointment, frustration, a sense of loss, and lack of enthusiasm. The intensity of sadness depends on its cause and the individual’s personality. If this feeling persists at the same intensity for a long period, it may lead to depression. Common expressions of sadness include:
- Crying
- Silence
- Social withdrawal
-
Fear
Fear is an intense and acute feeling that plays a crucial role in preserving our lives. When we face danger or a threat, the feeling of fear pushes us to defend ourselves or escape. This response is known as the “fight-or-flight” response. The experience of fear and how it is expressed varies by individual and situation. Some people are more sensitive to fear than others. Notably, fear can occur even without a real threat—just from imagining or anticipating something frightening.
-
Disgust
This type of emotional feeling appears when seeing something dirty, repulsive, or unethical, for example.
-
Anger
This feeling is often accompanied by aggressive or hostile behaviors. It is somewhat related to the fight-or-flight response discussed under fear, but it usually relates to the “fight” part—attacking the source of the threat.
-
Surprise and Amazement
This feeling can be positive or negative depending on the event that triggers it. For example, receiving a gift can cause pleasant surprise, whereas someone jumping in front of your car while driving can result in shock, which is negative. It also plays a role in the fight-or-flight response, as it triggers quick reactions during threats.
