How to Practice Mindfulness

It may be difficult to understand the term, and that’s natural. This is why it’s important to know how to practice mindfulness.

Dear reader, you should know that practicing mindfulness is not just about sitting in the proper posture, but about making it an integral part of your daily life and present moment.

Here are some ways to help you practice mindfulness:

  • Listen to yourself and pay more attention to observing your breathing, especially when you are experiencing strong emotions.
  • Be attentive and aware of what you feel now, including what you see, hear, and smell.
  • Realize that the thoughts and emotions going through your mind are transient and do not define you personally.
  • Focus on your body and what it’s doing, whether it’s shaking your foot while sitting or the continuous movement of your hand, and try to control and eliminate these through mindfulness.
  • Try to find even a few minutes in your busy day to pause and practice mindfulness, and over time, you will notice that this has a positive impact on your mental and physical health.

Three-Minute Mindfulness Practice

If this is your first time practicing mindfulness, try following the three-minute method as follows:

  1. When you feel stressed or are experiencing negative emotions, focus during the first minute on what’s going on in your mind and what’s happening in your body as a result of these emotions.
  2. In the second minute, try to focus on your breathing and control it, then attempt to control your mind by shifting its focus solely to your breathing.
  3. In the third and final minute of this exercise, expand your mind’s focus to all parts of your body, and try to notice what you feel and the environment around you, whether it’s lights or sounds.

At first, it may be difficult for you to practice mindfulness, and that’s completely natural, as your brain has become accustomed to working in a certain way. But with determination, perseverance, and daily practice, you will find it becomes easier and more enjoyable!
