1- Long-Term Effect of Meditation on Brain Gray Matter
A study published in 2015 in the aforementioned scientific journal examined the role of regular meditation practice on the brain’s gray matter.
This study specifically pointed out that the human brain is negatively affected by aging, which highlights the importance of having techniques that help reduce the aging process related to the brain.
To study the effect of meditation on protecting the brain from aging, researchers targeted a group of participants; some were asked to practice meditation, while others did not. They found that brain aging occurred in both groups, but the group practicing meditation experienced a slower brain aging process, particularly in the gray matter.
2- A Possible Link Between Meditation and Brain Aging
Another study published in the same scientific journal in 2017 found a direct relationship between regular meditation practice and protecting the brain from aging by slowing down this process.
The researchers conducting this study explained that many studies have found a connection between meditation practice and brain aging protection. However, the underlying cause of this relationship remains unknown, with researchers suggesting that a longer duration is needed to clarify this cause.
The researchers also investigated the reasons behind brain aging and found that stress and anxiety are significant factors in this process. They observed that meditation helps reduce these factors, thereby slowing down the rate of brain aging.
3- Mindfulness and Its Role in Brain Protection
A 2014 study published in the scientific journal Frontiers in Psychology explored the role of mindfulness specifically in protecting the brain from aging in older adults.
The researchers aimed to examine the effect of mindfulness on improving cognitive capacity among seniors.
They reported that practicing mindfulness contributes to improving mental health and overall emotional well-being, which positively reflects on the cognitive and perceptual abilities of older adults, emphasizing the importance of involving this age group in such activities.
4- Lifestyle Impact on Brain Aging
A review published in 2017 in the same journal examined the impact of lifestyle on brain aging.
The researchers noted that the number of people affected by dementia is expected to triple by 2040, posing a significant global challenge. Therefore, finding protective and preventive methods is of utmost importance.
One of the most important preventive methods against dementia is activating the brain and enhancing its cognitive and perceptual capacities.
After studying lifestyle effects, the researchers found that exercising, practicing various forms of meditation, studying and listening to music can significantly reduce the risk of dementia.
The researchers added that fortunately, these practices are low-cost and can be done at home.
