Meditation vs. Vacation: Which Has Longer-Lasting Positive Effects?

Some may be surprised to compare meditation and vacation, and wonder about their similarly close effects on the human psyche and relaxation. A study was conducted on a sample of women aged 30-60 over a 6-day vacation at a natural resort. The women were divided into three groups: those who meditate regularly, those who never meditate, and those who meditate only during the vacation.

At the start of the experiment, blood samples were taken from all groups, and again at the end of the study, to evaluate genetic patterns and biomarkers linked to aging and compare them. The results showed improved immune function due to the vacation. All groups clearly reported reduced anxiety and stress compared to before.

The group of women who had never meditated before but joined the meditation program during the study demonstrated a significantly greater ability to manage stress compared to those who did not meditate at all.

Notably, 10 months later, follow-up showed that results for all samples had returned to initial levels of depression and stress, except for the women who meditate regularly, who maintained better control over stress, anxiety, and enhanced positive energy and calmness. This means that if you cannot take a vacation, meditation can provide similar benefits.

Meditation During Vacation

Vacation is a beneficial break spent with family or friends, offering personal space free from work noise and pressures. However, with vacation tasks like gift shopping, cleaning, or arranging essentials, stress and anxiety may rise. Hence, practicing meditation, which unites spirit, mind, and body, makes the mind present, eliminates negative thoughts, and surrounds you with positive energy. Meditation also enhances your ability to face stress and negative thoughts, making it essential especially during vacation.

How to Meditate During Vacation

After understanding the benefits of meditation versus vacation, you can combine both by practicing Metta meditation during vacation, especially when feeling stressed, following these steps:

  • Lie down comfortably or find a comfortable chair and sit on it.
  • Close your eyes, focus on your breath, and visualize it.
  • Slowly repeat positive, energizing phrases such as “May I be happy,” “May I be healthy,” or “May I be loved,” 3-5 times with each breath.
  • Imagine a close person and look into their eyes as if they are speaking to you, repeating phrases like “May you be happy,” “May you be healthy,” or “May you be loved,” slowly 3-5 times with each breath.
  • Shift your focus to someone you compete with, or if none, imagine someone, and repeat the same phrases slowly 3-5 times per breath.
  • Now focus on a complete stranger, someone you don’t know or met by chance, repeating the phrases slowly 3-5 times per breath.
  • End your meditation by deeply focusing on your slow breaths, taking 5-10 breaths.
