Dialogic Meditation

Dialogic Meditation

Meditation is the act of stripping everything away to focus on one thing. It’s a deep search for the voice of peace and calm, a journey inward to find relaxation and serenity within oneself. Many people try to control life events, planning even the simplest or most complex tasks, and they engage in constant self-talk—an inner voice that never stops advising, criticizing, or reflecting. How can this voice find stillness and peace of mind? Through dialogic meditation.
This is one of the types of meditation that involves speaking with oneself, observing thoughts, plans, goals, and problems as if they were another person—leading to the best solutions and actions, done calmly and mindfully.

How to Practice Dialogic Meditation

The steps of dialogic meditation unfold as follows:

Discover Your Inner Voice

The first stage is discovering the inner voice through these steps:

  • Ask yourself, “Who am I?” and write around 20 different answers that reflect your actions in the present and past to understand yourself more clearly.
  • Focus on your first impressions—they’re cues from your intuition, the initial feeling that tells you whether to proceed or be cautious.
  • Listen to your inner dialogue, even if it conflicts with external motivations. Understand it first, without the need to judge or act on it immediately.
  • Identify the sources of the voices in your conversation. In other words, recognize which opinions agree or conflict—often mirroring the surrounding people and ideas.
  • Breathe deeply and calm the voices that clearly aren’t your own. Quiet them gradually until your voice is the only one you hear.

Connect with Your Inner Voice

Now that you hear only your inner voice, it’s time to connect with it through these steps:

  • Feel your inner voice through subtle emotions—signals that it’s reaching out to communicate with you.
  • Close your eyes and listen to what your inner voice is saying.
  • Focus more deeply on this voice. When other alternative thoughts arise, ignore them as if they’re strangers speaking, and you don’t know who they are.
  • Respond to your inner voice and have a conversation with it. If you prefer, you can speak out loud to make the interaction feel more real—it may also help you distinguish your true voice.
  • Follow your inner voice if it’s aligned with your heart’s desires. It may warn you to be cautious about something important.

Ask Questions

Continue dialogic meditation by asking your inner voice practical, thoughtful questions like: What are my goals? What are my plans? What are the best ways to achieve them? Then, reflect on the answers and listen carefully. Think through them several times to gain clarity—that’s when you’ll gain the insight you seek from this meditation.

Helpful Tips

Follow these guidelines when practicing dialogic meditation:

  • Be in a quiet environment free from noise to reach a deep state of calm, enabling true connection with your inner voice.
  • Close your eyes during meditation so you can fully focus—as if you’re the only one on Earth.
  • Breathe deeply—inhaling through your nose and exhaling more slowly through your mouth.
  • Concentrate on the sound of your breath. In dialogic meditation, it should be the only external sound you hear.
