Nature of the Meditation Stages

The basic stages of meditation summarize how to elevate the mind and body into a unified whole to achieve the general goal of meditation, which is attaining contentment, gratitude, and inner peace for the meditator. Therefore, there are five essential stages of meditation as follows:

  • Stage One: Balance Between Body and Mind

The first stage in practicing meditation is achieving overall balance between body and mind; the body and mind work side by side in an integrative partnership, so they should not be treated separately or individually. Therefore, when preparing yourself to meditate, you must balance your mind and body together by recognizing the emotions and thoughts arising in the mind and then translating them into actions and behaviors within the body. This balance has important effects as follows:

  1. Increasing creativity and innovation capabilities in various areas of life.
  2. Reaching a high level of inner peace, harmony, and stillness.
  3. Enhancing levels of concentration, attention, and self-awareness.
  • Stage Two: Detachment from Thoughts

The second stage of meditation involves detaching from the thoughts circulating in the mind. This stage is deeper and more precise than the previous one because through it you feel the high energy level your body and mind possess, which activates your hidden abilities and energy, allowing you to transcend any thoughts.
Achieving balance between mind and body is followed by activating these hidden powers to enhance feelings of compassion and forgiveness toward oneself and others, as well as significantly developing intuition.

  • Stage Three: Self-Discovery

The previous two stages focused on developing and improving the mind-body efficiency. Upon entering the third stage of meditation, you become deeper in understanding and awareness of your self-consciousness. Here lies endless peace and tranquility, the ultimate goal of meditation.
This stage is fundamentally based on unlimited imagination of the place where you live and moving mentally to a more comfortable and safe place you prefer and love, to renew your physical and mental energy. Accordingly, you must overcome all past thoughts and situations and live fully in the present and future.

  • Stage Four: Developing Communication Skills with the World

The fourth stage depends on a significant development in self-awareness, where you gain a deeper and clearer understanding of your psychological and mental makeup and interact with your internal world and influence those around you more effectively. By practicing meditation through its first four stages, you can truly let go of disturbing thoughts and old habits you have become addicted to, thereby enabling change in your thinking and behaviors.

  • Stage Five: Stabilization of the Mind

The final stage of meditation summarizes the outcome of the meditation process as an integrated whole. In this stage, your mind stabilizes, distractions fade away, and you experience overwhelming happiness, complete comfort, and deep relaxation.

Advanced Meditation Stages

There are 7 advanced stages and levels in meditation practice, but they require commitment and gradual understanding of meditation’s nature and mastering it properly. These stages focus on awareness, its advancement, control over it, and maintaining a state of vigilance to reach a degree of joy and appreciation of the blessings in all aspects of life.
